Recently, a group of SOLUTIONS agencies attended a workshop on setting boundaries in our work lives and our personal lives.  Everyone agreed that setting boundaries is a skill that can be, well, difficult.

Boundaries are necessary for good communication and a healthy attitude towards our co-workers, customers, friends, and family. But, if they are so important, why are they so difficult?

One reason might be that many people have a challenge separating the things in life that are their responsibility from actions that are the responsibility of others.

For example, do you have anyone at work that behaves in a way that is very different (in other words, "wrong") from the way you would do it?  Have you ever tried to "fix" that person?

Maybe they have a tendency to talk about others.  You disapprove and worry, fret, and otherwise try to control their behavior.  Why should they change when you have done all the work of worrying and fretting for them?  What would happen if you took responsibility for your own actions and simply did not join in on the conversations? This boundary allows their actions to follow a natural course that probably ends up with a visit with the agency owner.

Making a decision to control what you can, and letting go of what you can't - this is setting boundaries.  Has the staff in your agency learned to set boundaries?  What challenges do you personally face setting boundaries?  Would you like to see more classes and discussion groups on this topic?
